『ラ・カージュ・オ・フォール (La Cage aux Folles)』は、1973年のジャン・ポワレ作のフランスの劇として誕生し、ストレートプレイとして仏演劇史上最長のロングランを記録した。その後、1978年に初めてフランス・イタリア合作で映画化され（邦題「Mr.レディMr.マダム」）大反響を起こし、1996年にハリウッドで「バードケージ(The Birdcage)」としてリメイクされました。

ミュージカル版は、アーサー・ローレンツ演出、スコット・サーモン振付によって、1983年8月21日パレス・シアターで開幕。全1,761回の公演を行った。この初演で、トニー賞６部門、ドラマ・デスク賞３部門を受賞するというセンセーショナルを巻き起こした。その3年後の1986年5月7日にロンドン・パレイディアムで開幕。ウエストエンドでも約8カ月間(全301回)のロングランを達成。

そして、2004年12月9日ブロードウェイのマーキース・シアターでジェリー・ザクス演出、ジェリー・ミッチェル振付でリバイバルされ、全229回の公演を行い、再びトニー賞２部門、ドラマ・デスク賞２部門を受賞。さらに2008年にはロンドン／ウエストエンドでも開幕し、オリビエ賞『ベスト・リバイバル・オブ・ミュージカル』受賞、2010年にはブロードウェーで２度目のリバイバルとなり、トニー賞史上初の２度目の「ベスト・リバイバル・オブ・ミュージカル」受賞という快挙を成し遂げた。

日本では1985年、青井陽治演出、リンダ・ヘイバーマン振付で近藤正臣のザザ、岡田真澄のジョルジュのカップルで初演。その8年後の1993年から市村正親の当たり役のひとつとして上演を重ねてきた。そして2008年からはジョルジュ役に市村の劇団四季時代からの盟友・鹿賀丈史を迎え、「ラ・カージュ」史上最高のコンビとして、2008年、2012年、2015年、2018年公演とも、初日から千穐楽まで連日のスタンディングオベーションという大成功を収め、今なおその人気は衰えを見せない。

"La Cage aux Folles" was born as a French play by Jean Poiret in 1973, and recorded the longest long run in the history of French theater as a straight play. After that, it was made into a movie for the first time in 1978 with a French-Italian collaboration (Japanese title "Mr. Lady Mr. Madam"), and it caused a great response, and in 1996 it was remade as "The Birdcage" in Hollywood.

The musical version opens at the Palace Theater on August 21, 1983, directed by Arthur Laurents and choreographed by Scott Salmon. A total of 1,761 performances were performed. This premiere created a sensation of winning six Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards. Three years later, it opened on May 7, 1986 at the London Palladium. Achieved a long run for about 8 months (301 times in total) at the waist end.

Then, on December 9, 2004, he was revived at the Marquise Theater on Broadway, directed by Jerry Sachs and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, and performed 229 times in total, winning two Tony Awards and two Drama Desk Awards again. In 2008, it opened in London / West End, won the Olivier Award "Best Revival of Musical", became the second revival on Broadway in 2010, and the second "Best Revival" in the history of the Tony Awards.・ Achieved the feat of receiving the "Of Musical" award.

In Japan, it premiered in 1985 with a couple of Masaomi Kondo's Zaza and Masumi Okada's Georges, directed by Yoji Aoi and choreographed by Linda Haverman. Eight years later, since 1993, it has been performed as one of the winning roles of Masachika Ichimura. And from 2008, we will welcome Takeshi Kaga, an ally from the Shiki Theater Company of Ichimura, to the role of Georges, and as the best combination in the history of "La Cage", performances in 2008, 2012, 2015 and 2018 will be from the first day. With the great success of standing ovation every day until Senraku, its popularity has not declined.
